I remember a time when Ryan and I would make fun of vegans. We thought it was extreme and unnecessary. We lived in the dark without doing research and liked to carry on with our lives as if nothing was going wrong. As if the world wasn't on fire, the reef isn't dying, and the amazon wasn't on fire due to cattle farming.

But we did our research and learned about what we were lacking in our lives.. compassion. We know that most people are generally good and don't want to cause harm, so for us, going vegan was the easy option. We started diving deep on trying to find reasons why veganism just isn't right and we needed meat to survive. We couldn't find one reasoning that wasn't opinion based. We were shook to the core with the sudden reality that our planet is in danger and the only people that can change, is ourselves. Although the majority of damage being done is by corporate companies that are only after financial gain, we wanted to at least try and do something that will help on a day to day basis.

It was in that split moment that we realized change had to come within all of us for our world to head into the right direction. To live a more ethical, cleaner, and mindful life. These reasons remain stuck in our heads to this day and haven’t changed our minds to go back to animal products ever again. We know change is hard, but if we all vote with our dollar, then maybe the giant corporations will listen to us. All we can do is try and make this world sustainable for the future.

Here’s a list on the top three reasons why we and why you should go plant-based:

1. The environment

We all know the planet is dying and if you’re not aware, then it’s time you cared. Future generations won’t be able to live on Earth for that long of a time that we hoped for because we are destroying all our world. The amount of resources it takes to raise and murder a cow is appalling.

70% of Earth’s water is going to livestock. Water that can be given to human beings instead of mass produced animals. The only reason we have so many cows, chickens, ducks, etc. is because the consumers are buying A LOT of animal products. Cow’s manure releases methane and nitrous oxide which is a huge contributor to climate change. More cows = more cow poop = breaking down the ozone layer that protects us. The manure also has a negative side effect of killing the natural wildlife. There shouldn't be this much shit that mother nature should deal with (pun intended).

The ozone layers protects us from getting cancer, cataracts, and other life threatening diseases.

It takes 20 times less land to feed a vegan than a meat eater. All the grains that are being cropped for animals can be used to feed humans instead. Plus if you’re buying from local and organic farms, you are supporting families that need the money. Rather than big corporations that don’t care about the future state of our climate.

2. Health

You don’t need to eat meat to live or be healthy, seriously look it up. I’m no doctor, but I’m pretty sure we're not dead even though we haven't eaten meat in 2 years. Don't listen to me though, do your own research and access what is best for you. A lot of vegan nutritionists might give our advice that just doesn't work for your body type. Health is important and it's up to you to see what you have to do to live a longer and healthier life.

Iron, zinc, calcium, omega 3, vitamin d, vitamin a, etc. all those essential nutrients we need on a daily basis are found in vegetables, grains, nuts, fruits, and beans. There is nothing that meat can add to your diet that “vegan foods” won’t give you. In fact, the studies show time and time again that plants give you more quantities of these nutrients over animal products. Plants have all the protein we need, without the inhumane suffering.

Tofu is a good source of protein and contains all eight essential amino acids. It is also an excellent source of iron and calcium and the minerals manganese, selenium and phosphorous. In addition, tofu is a good source of magnesium, copper, zinc and vitamin B1.

By doing more research on what nutrients your body needs, you can live a longer and healthier life. Going vegan does not mean eating salads all day (gross), you can still enjoy eating hamburgers, tacos, chili, etc. just vegan-ized.


3. For the animals

Speciesism is alive and real! How do you love dogs, but eat cows for dinner? How do you enjoy watching pig videos on the internet, yet eat pigs? Anybody who hates injustice in the world should take a re-evaluation at the food they are consuming. Animals are not here solely for our diet. There is no such thing as “free range” or “ethically sourced” meat when you’re killing the life of a helpless animal. Your body is not a graveyard. There are videos on online that take you backstage to slaughterhouses and show the true colors of what the industry is like. I don’t want to go into full detail about the torture, but you can watch them here if your stomach is up for it.

They’re hard to watch, but it’s important to know what you are doing to these animals. Animals are forcibly fed, shot up with antibiotics, live in their own feces, electrocuted, overcrowded, etc. Stripped away from their privilege to enjoy a happy life, like any other living being wants to do. If you pay for it, you’re supporting it.

We know that going fully vegan is hard to do overnight and some people don’t want to, but cutting out some animal products throughout the week will do a lot for our world, your health, and those helpless animals that want to live. Become the change you want to see and try the best you can to create a better planet. Future generations will thank you for at least trying to let our planet live on.
